SIXTEEN
'All Hands on Deck'
In quadrant 12, 17,000 miles from the dead planet Jupiter, the Borgz star cruiser sat idle, losing the starship’s signal not long after the Daxian initiated warp drive. In the cruiser's flight deck, an exact copy of a Daxian starship’s only larger, stood four black armoured Borgz, who suddenly turned as one to the source of a 'beeping' alarm that pierced the air.
"What's that alarm, fool?" Commander Haz barked at his second-in-command. It was coming from the navigation and external-systems panel.
"Set the coordinates,” Haz barked, a satisfied grin creasing his devil-like face. “ And alert Septo Zan. Tell him his Daxian scum will soon die."
Inside the auxiliary-bay of Xen’s starship, the Daxian hurried his two guests along on a premonition of trouble. "Come," he said, "let us leave this planet for the safety of space. Then I will need to contact Dax and speak with the Emperor, only then can we discuss matters further. In light of these new developments, the whole mission will need to be reassessed."
Tomas followed behind the tall alien with his dog tailing-up the rear. It was like a dream. His senses told him the starship was real, his feet felt the solidness of the deck beneath—only his mind had trouble grasping the sheer incredibleness of the situation. He was on an alien spaceship about to lift-off into space for crying-out loud! That’s when the trio walked into the flight deck, and Tomas stood, gaping in awe "Wow," was all he could say.
"Please," Xen gestured to the navigator's seat next his, “take a seat.
Tomas sat down, and the seat moved around him adjusting until comfort and safety zones were optimal. He glanced nervously at Bluey, who sat beside him like he was sitting in the lounge room at home.
Just then, an alarm sounded and a light began to flash below the control panel screen. Xen reached forward and punched the flashing button. The screen came alive to show a map of the solar system with a flashing red dot. "It's the Borgz star-cruiser. They have detected us." Xen sat back and using the small pad of flight controls in the seat's left-arm activated the ship’s antimatter engine. He then piloted the spaceship off the ground.
"Wow, man this is incredible!" Tomas exclaimed, as the ship quickly rose level with the top of the escarpment cliff-face. Then warp-drive engaged and he was thrust back in his seat. In something like what he'd seen on Star Trek, the stars suddenly appeared right in front of the ship, only to turn into multi-coloured lines and begin flashing past. After a few moments of feeling like his brain had filled with buzzing flies, the sensation stopped. Now, right in front of the ship, turned a huge red planet. "Holy cow!"
Xen glanced at the Earth boy. "From your schooling, you would know that planet to be Mars," he said, "which hopefully will hide us for a time. I will now contact my Emperor and seek his counsel." He leant forward and punched a button below the screen. After a moment, the screen flickered and a warrior from the signal corps stared back at him. Both men thumped their chest in salute and Xen said: "Signaller, contact the Emperor on his private line." The screen went blank…fuzzy…then cleared to a room that shone with gold and silver ornaments. Seated in a chair before a gold table was Emperor Zin, supreme ruler of Callix. The Emperor's personal comm-system, a small, round communicator-bot the size of a golf ball, hovered just in front of its alien monarch.
Tomas and Bluey watched on transfixed. Xen bowed his head and the two aliens began to converse in a language like nothing either of them had ever heard before. Fortunately, thanks to Bluey's bio-chip translator, he was soon hearing the conversation in plain English—so he began to translate parts for his master: "Xen's telling him about the Borgz. The other alien says the mission must be aborted until the exact reason is found for the Borgz presence on Earth. Xen agrees. Other alien tells Xen to deactivate bio-chips and remove enhancements from all agents. Xen says this will take some time. Other alien says to take all the time he needs, just don’t leave behind any evidence." That’s when the screen went blank.
