FIFTEEN
'Contact'
After enduring his mother’s lecture about the dangers of the mine and that he'd be grounded for a month if he went in there again, Tomas played video games for an hour before climbing into bed and falling into a fitful sleep. He began to dream about Bluey, all the fun times they used to have together down the beach. Only to have the ‘beeping’ of the alarm clock wake him at 5:30, where a wave of sadness washed over as reality set in.
He slid from his bed and dressed in his footy gear. His mother had placed his school clothes in his bag the night before, so he slung it over his shoulder and tiptoed from the bedroom.
In a Daxian starship's bio-area, not more than a kilometre away, Bluey lay on the same metal bench as before, only this time he was asleep and not unconscious from a cocktail of alien drugs. Xen retrieved the sensor-data recorded by his agents bio-chips and fed it into an analizer—a computer-like machine—which he hoped would provide the answers as to why the Borgz are on Earth. During the process Bluey dozed-off, so Xen let him rest while he repaired the small stress fracture in the hull from the laser cannon blast.
It was now daylight—6.00a.m Earth time. Xen sat in the pilot's seat running an instrument check, as Bluey, having just woke came skittering into the flight-deck.
"Settle down, my furry friend. I extracted the data from your bio-chips; you have been asleep for a total of 6 Earth hours, and in answer to your final question," Xen pointed outside. "It would seem that someone has come looking for you." The Daxian had scanned the intruder just before his agent entered.
Bluey’s heart leapt in his throat. Standing outside the ship dressed in his footy gear was Tomas. He had his hands cupped to his mouth obviously calling-out, however the dense alien-metal of the ship's hull prevented any noise from entering. Bluey jumped straight out of the chair and hit the ground skidding and scrambling. "Let me out of here! Let me out of here!" He yelled.
"8d, please." Xen rose from his seat and stood waiting for his excited agent to calm down. "I think that would be best,” he said, “rather than beam your little master straight into the ship. The shock might upset him too much. First,” he leant over and punched buttons on the comm-panel, “we need to de-activate the cloaking-shields and lower the internal landing stairs. Come."
The unusual pair made their way from the flight deck with Bluey darting around the tall Daxian’s heels. They went past the antimatter engine and into an area Bluey hadn't seen before, where Xen stopped before a control panel similar to the one in the flight-deck. The Daxian punched some buttons and the screen lit-up. And there was the Earth boy, this time with a look of pure shock animating his face.
Outside, a gleaming spaceship had materialised out of thin air right in front of Tomas only moments before. "Holy cow!" He’d shrieked, jumping backwards and tumbling down a small embankment. He scrambled to his feet to see the ship was still there. "Holy cow!" He shrieked again. "It's real!" As he watched mouth agape, a hole opened underneath the huge craft and a stairway angled down to the ground. Then another shock, as Bluey bounded out of the craft barking and yapping! "Bluey! What the…?"
Tripping on a small bush halfway to his master and tumbling end over end, Bluey regained his feet, and in one impossible 10 metre bound, landed right in front of Tomas, wiggling about like a stationary worm. "Orrrrrhh," he howled in delight
Tomas struggled to grasp the enormity of it all: a spaceship…his dog. His dog was on the spaceship! "What's going on, Bluey," all he could say.
"The silver man, they call them Daxians, he'll show you everything. Oh master, it's so good to see you!" Bluey told his master in fluent English.
Of course, Tomas had heard Bluey try to talk in English before, only didn't realise it at the time. This time though, as he digested what his dog just told him, tumblers started to fall into place: all the strange goings-on, the rabbit thing… That’s when the air in front of him began to shimmer. Just when Tomas thought events couldn't get any more incredible, the strangest sight he’d ever seen took form before his eyes. His first impression was of a tall medieval knight dressed in long black and silver robes, only no knight he knew of had silver skin and eyes that shone like fire. Tomas took a step back in fear, glancing at Bluey, who to his amazement stood there happily waging his tail. "Bluey, come here," he said. And that's when the alien spoke to him.
"Do not be afraid, little earthling, I will not harm you. I am Xen from the planet Dax. I extend greetings from my people to yours." Xen then thumped his chest in the closed fist greeting-salute of his people.
When Tomas just stood there with mouth hanging open, Bluey said: "It's okay, master, Xen is here to help us get rid of the Borgz."
Tomas dragged his eyes away from the incredible alien and his ship just long enough to glance at his dog. "Rid of the what?"
"The Borgz, they are shape-shifters from a system near my own," Xen told Tomas. "Now, that reminds me, it would be fatal if a Borgz ship caught us out in the open like this, so would you do me the honour of being my guest, little earthling?"
"Guest…you mean go on your ship!" Tomas said in shock. When the tall Daxian nodded and smiled, showing a mouth of perfect white fangs, all this little earthling could say was: "Wow."
"Please," Lord Xen gestured toward the landing stairs," grant me the honour. The first alien to step on board my ship."
Tomas smiled, relaxing a little. It sounded weird having this tall silver being call him an alien.
Suddenly, Bluey took-off towards the ship, barking and jumping about.
"Is he always like this?" Xen inquired, shaking his silver head.
Tomas laughed. "Yeah, always."
Inside the starship, the most unlikely trio ever to be seen on Earth stood next to an auxiliary control panel. As his human guest looked around in awe, Xen retracted the stairs and closed the outer-hatch, then punched the button to re-activate the ship’s cloaking-shields.
