'Mortal Danger'
Tomas had no way of knowing that his dog was held captive in a mineshaft. Stunned by the laser blast, Bluey was rendered unconscious. Invisible matter-beams now held him upright in the air one metre above the shaft floor, just to the right of the Borgz habitat. In original form, Borgz warrior Septo Zan stood before the Daxian agent with a compact version of a field-scanner in his right, upper hand. The machine emitted a low-pitched drone, as it x-rayed the Earth animal's body, simultaneously projecting a hologram in the air adjacent. The Daxian bio-chips that prevented Septo Zan from assimilating the agent, were clearly visible at the base of its skull. He would now remove these with a laser, and then complete the mission.
It was many aeons ago, when a technologically advanced race sent a probe into its neighbouring System searching for signs of life. What the Daxians found, were a race of devil-like beings barely evolved beyond what humans would define as savages. Naturally, these tall, shining-silver humanoids seemed like gods to this underdeveloped and simple race.
The Daxians then took it upon themselves to help this race of beings they eventually name Borgz. What they didn’t know, couldn’t have known, is they were about to inflict shape-shifters onto the Universe. At first, the Borgz were docile even grateful to their benefactors for the many lifestyle improvements. However, two loxors (months) on, a young, aggressive Borgz mother became enraged when a Daxian tragg got too close to one of its young. What the tragg’s owner witnessed, apart from incredible strength and ferocity, was the universe's first biological assimilation, as the Borgz mother’s form dissolved into a cellular mass and invaded its hapless pet.
This ability, and another mistake by the Daxians, was to herald the onset of the Borgz War* Technology left behind from the Daxian bailout enabled what was once an underdeveloped and simple race, to become advanced and aggressively complex. Two axors (decades) later, the Borgz launched an assault against Dax, attacking with their own version of the Daxian starship. The attack, of course, was repelled, only two Borgz ships escaped utter destruction. However, not before a Daxian warrior was captured during the battle and assimilated. Here lies the catalyst, the reason every high-caste Daxian now wears an implant. What began as a preventative device against assimilation, has evolved over time into a bio-enhancer that dependant on type, gave its host incredible powers.
No Borgz has ever had the chance to examine this device before. And this singular point, is what split Septo Zan's lips into something resembling a smile, as he now walked toward the Daxian agent, laser-knife held in his top-left hand.
That’s when a brilliant flash of light lit the cavern, as Xen materialised beside the Borgz habitat. He’d arrived over the Earth town just moments before, homing-in on his agent's bio-enhancer. He then used his starship's anti-matter transporter to beam him straight into the mineshaft. "Hold black devil!" Xen barked.
A sound of pure hate hissed from between Septo Zan’s fangs. "Sssss. Daxian dog!" He turned to face his ancient adversary.
"I should have guessed the Borgz were somehow involved," said Xen." The Alliance predicted you would soon master intergalactic travel."
"Sssss…you dogs can't help but interfere, " hissed Septo Zan. Due to translation ability, he understood the words of his foe. " Now, you and your pathetic agent will pay!" He went to leap at the Daxian…only couldn't move. Simultaneously realising this was no ordinary adversary before him. High-caste Daxians’ possess mind control, a mixture of telekinesis and telepathy. Septo Zan was held fast by the sheer power of his adversary’s mind.
"Struggle all you want,” said Xen, “it will do little good. You will release the agent. Now!" The laser-knife then dropped from the Borgz hand, to clatter across the shaft floor. Xen was then about to transport himself and his agent back to his starship, however his arrival hadn’t gone unnoticed. The Borgz star-cruiser detected Xen’s ship when it dropped from hyperspace and cloaking-shields were activated, emitting a pulse of energy.
The Borgz immediately dispatched a Milarz transporter. Inside sat a strike-group of three warriors, armoured to the hilt. The craft hovered above the mine 60 parsecs behind the Daxian.
Fortunately for Xen, the Borgz haven’t mastered transporter technology yet, and the three warriors', clad in armour and clutching blast-rifles, suffered the same fate as the Daxian agent when entering the mine-shaft, hitting the coal-shelf floor with a resounding ‘splash’.
This gave Xen time to react.
*The Borgz Wars began in the xor (year) of 129478, ending in the Daxian victory at Bamxx, 129481. The Borgz attack was uncoordinated, individually driven by greed and malice, a simple frontal assault in the naive hope of total victory. The Daxians easily repelled and scattered the first wave; the space-battle then braking into small dogfights which the superior Daxian ships won with ease. Cosmic Codex
